Submersible
Handheld VHF radio, are simply VHF radio that are splash proof to some
extent. Some can give you water resistance others can be completely
submerged into the water without damage to the radios internals. Many
people might not see the need to purchase a fully submersible marine
radio but some users have genuine reasons to purchase them. This is
typically common among users whose marine vhf radio and marine radio
are exposed to adverse weather conditions on a regular basis. Thus if
the marine radio VHF is not protected they can easily get damaged.
Light
vessel owners and Jet Ski owners use submersible handheld marine radio
at open sea and on inland lakes; these types of VHF radios are more
suited to them so that should they ever be in an emergency where they
must communicate with shore because their boat or vessel has capsized
or if they are stranded for instance, VHF radios damaged by water will
not stop them from doing so.
Submersible
handheld vhf radios are protected by a thin film of rubbery grip. Their
seals can prevent water from entering inside them usually up to a
maximum depth of about 6 feet. Some are even usable underwater, but
these are rare to find and really not necessary in my opinion. There
also a few models designed for performance boat owners that get a lot
of water in the cockpit that can float which makes them easy to find
should the marine radio VHF fall overboard or need to be used in harsh
conditions. These types are dependant on the manufacturer as some may
survive submersion in water better than other models; you can get more

One
such submersible handheld VHF radio that has gained a lot of merit is
the Uniden MHS550 marine radio VHF. This model retails for about 200
dollars. For a handheld this marine radio goes one step further and
gives you access to all 10 NOAA (national oceanic and atmospheric
administration) weather channels and additional S.A.M.E weather alerts;
Useful for navigators out at sea. This marine VHF radio can keep you
connected on its rechargeable batteries for 10 straight hours. It can
be at a depth of 1 meter for a maximum of 30 minutes without much
trouble, plenty of time for you to save it in the unfortunate event
that it falls over board. It has the largest backlit LCD in its class
and is coupled with very sturdy rubber grips and seals. For those of
you who are curious to just how rugged and well built this device is,
it is rated 7/8 on the JIS (Japan Industrial Standards) scale for water
resistance which means water will not enter it when immersed under
water.
