Commercial grade SSB radios are no different from their counterpart Marine SSB
radios. I know a lot of people tend to get a little spooked by the word
'commercial' and think that they must be expensive. Sideband radio
otherwise known as single sideband radio need not be too expensive to
be useful. Marine SSB radios, sing CB radios, sideband radios allow you
to communicate over great distances. They are not susceptible to major
interference by obstacles because of the high frequency they operate
on; typically the 1.5 to 28 MHz range.
They
are also quite energy efficient too using less than 200 watts of power.
Marine radar and marine chart plotter though work well in conjunction
with SSB radio and GPS devices give you a multi-purpose navigational
setup that takes care of most of your navigation needs at open sea. CB
radios though are not exactly what you would be looking for as an
alternative to marine SSB radio and neither are marine chart plotter,
because CB radios are not very useful at open sea and marine chart
plotters' need additional devices to interpret the information
received; point your browser to www.SailRadios.com to learn more about
the various types of frequency radios and SSB radios to learn why.
The
IC-M710 a marine SSB radio by Icom can allow you to conference your
communication over thousands of miles. It has different features to the
IC-M700Pro SSB radio, for instance it will give you far more channels
and more modes. It still maintains the very user friendly interface
that makes Icom's SSB radio popular.
Powerful
memory scanning and automatic antenna tuning are still there on the
IC-M710, which I think takes off a lot of the hard work in setup. And
the large rotary knobs for controlling the setup are still there for
your added convenience. Perhaps Icom should trademark this ergonomic
design feature.
It
has a large amber back lit control display with adjustable lighting,
for channel or frequency viewing, and operating status; making its LCD
practical for use in sunlight or night operations. The IC-M710 still
maintains a feature I know a lot of users can not do without; the
SeaWave feature. The SeaWave feature is a low cost subscription add-on
that allows SSB radio users to securely transmit and receive digital
data over high frequencies, such as internet e-mail, color weather
charts, weather forecasts etc using their sideband radio.
Definitely,
Icom's IC-M710 is a remarkable contender in the marine SSB radio market
and can be an alternative to the benchmark IC-M700Pro Marine SSB radio.
